June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Wheat rose in Chicago on signs rains are delaying the winter-crop harvest in the U.S., the world’s largest exporter of the grain.

About 11 percent of the winter-wheat crop was collected by June 16, behind last year’s 51 percent pace and the five-year average of 25 percent, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said yesterday.

U.S. wheat stockpiles before next year’s harvest will be smaller than the government’s earlier forecast after drought and unusually cold weather damaged winter varieties in the southern Great Plains, government data show.

U.S. farmers and ranchers are competing in a very active international agri-food trade environment with many countries that invest significant public and private funds through a variety of programs to develop markets and promote their products. That is a primary conclusion of a major study just completed on behalf of several U.S. agri-food export market development organizations by Agralytica Consulting, Alexandria, Va.
